Firstly I can hear you ask what even is microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure that uses a spray of microcrystals to remove the outermost layer of the skin. It lifts away all the dry, dead skin cells and in doing so will inevitably reveal younger, healthier-looking skin.
This procedure also encourages the production of a new underlying layer of skin. With the correct care and nourishment this new skin will flourish with higher levels of collagen and elastin, which we all know is the gateway to younger looking skin.
Although we do not treat it as such here at the spa microdermabrasion has become seen as a ‘lunch hour’ procedure purely due to it great effects at speed and its lack of downtime. Microdermabrasion is primarily used as a more clinical and extreme exfoliation but when exfoliating the skin and revealing fresher healthier skin it ultimately helps to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of ageing. It can also dramatically improve the appearance of acne scarring.
All of this comes with virtually no side effects! The machine contains non-allergenic crystals so suits all skin types including the most sensitive. As a therapist we are able to alter the intensity and level of the treatment so starting at the lowest working the way up. Microdermabrasion does not present any serious risks when it is performed by a qualified therapist. At the most some people may experience slight skin irritation after microdermabrasion but this is easily soothed through a nourishing serum or mask used post micro.
How exactly does the microdermabrasion work?
During a microdermabrasion treatment, the qualified therapist directs a stream of tiny ("micro") aluminum oxide crystals through a hand piece that is placed against the skin. These dermabrasion crystals exfoliate the skin, and the mild suction created by the microdermabrasion system removes the skin debris and crystals.
Is the treatment painful?
When we hear vaccum and suction this can often be intimidating but no need, the treatment is in no way painful. The treatment can cause a slight warming sensation as the microdermabrasion crystals gently slough away old and damaged layers of skin. But that is it, nothing more, so fear not!
After a microdermabrasion treatment, the newly revealed layer of skin is usually more sensitive and requires extra protection from the sun. You should not feel uncomfortable, but you should be particularly careful about wearing sunscreens. Applying moisturizing creams to hydrate and calm the skin can also prevent any potential irritation.
Microdermabrsion is easily one of our most favoured facials and it is easy to understand why. If you have not tried one yet it is worth having a go if only to feel the smoothness of your skin on waking the next day!
