Leafy Greens

Leafy greens along with berries are now being seen as magical super foods. Lets face it these greens have been around for so long but I feel been over looked for the healthy benefits and been classed as a little boring. I am not going to deny I would prefer a chocolate bar over a salad but when learning about the body and just the vast array of vitamins and minerals that come in these little green leaves it is hard to ignore.

Leafy greens are full of vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting phytochemicals. They are rich in fibre, an important nutrient for weight loss and maintenance because it keeps you feeling full and helps control your hunger. Fibre can also lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and help to temper blood-sugar swings by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates into your bloodstream after meals. lowering the risk of heart disease. Leafy greens also contain a lot of water, which helps keep you hydrated and contributes to beautiful skin and hair.

The vitamin E found in green leafy vegetables works with vitamin C to keep skin healthy as you age. This vitamin also helps protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays and may help reduce your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Leafy greens are an excellent source of folate, which can reduce your risk of heart disease and memory loss. And since folate contributes to the production of serotonin, it may help ward off depression and improve mood.

Some leafy greens, like collards and kale, are particularly rich in calcium, which helps keep your teeth and bones strong and reduces your overall risk for osteoporosis. Calcium also contributes to muscle function and blood-pressure management. Leafy greens contain potassium as well, which further protects against osteoporosis and helps to control blood pressure.

I understand it is hard to make sure you are getting in your 2 and ½ cups at least of veggie intake per day. So why not look into a super green powder? In one glass you can get the adequate intake of vitamins and minerals that you need. Of course nothing will beat the real vegetable but we have to get those nutrients some how. If you don’t want to have just the powder with water why not try it in a juice or smoothie? Even sprinkle it on your food. As long as those minerals are reaching your body you will feel the benefits no end.

If you were interested in a super greens powder we do stock a tropical flavoured one here and also a berry powder from the natural health company. To read all the benefits of berries click here. They are an amazing way to start getting the essential food groups into the body without the added expense and without changing your eating plan – just an added bonus.
