Breast Cancer Awareness

It is very rare these days that we meet someone who has not been affected in some capacity by cancer. Wether it be breast cancer or not it is a hideous disease that is only growing throughout the world. This is why we take the month of October here in Australia to be made into Breast Cancer Awareness month. This month provides us with an opportunity to focus on breast cancer especially and its impact on those affected by the disease in our own community.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among Australian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). With one in eight women diagnosed by the time they turn 85. This year 15,600 Australian women and 145 men are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Despite improvements in diagnosis, treatment and management in recent decades, 42 Australian women are diagnosed each day and seven will lose their lives to the disease.  Raising awareness is an important part of reducing the impact of breast cancer on Australian women and families.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a special time to acknowledge and support the many women and families across the country and in our own backyard that are affected by breast cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness Month originated in the United States in the 1980s and is now the internationally recognised month for breast cancer awareness.

In Australia, the overall five year survival rate for breast cancer in females is 90%. If the cancer is limited to the breast, 96% of patients will be alive five years after diagnosis; this figure excludes those who die from other diseases. If the cancer has spread to the regional lymph nodes, five year relative survival drops to 80%.

In 2014, 2814 women and 30 men died of breast cancer in Australia.

It is for these exact reasons and statistics that we have decided to take an active roll in this years Breast Cancer Awareness.
